The Access to Algebra program by AdvanceKentucky is a comprehensive model designed to provide a rigorous middle school mathematics program, with the ultimate goal of increasing student participation and success in Algebra I in the 8th grade.
This program operates as a partnership where selected schools commit to following the Access to Algebra Math Elements of Success model. It provides several key supports:
Professional Development: Free, comprehensive "Laying the Foundation" training for all teachers, full access to lessons and assessments, and support from a full-time Math Content Manager.
Incentives and Funding: The program offers monetary incentives for students who meet math benchmarks on a national exam (typically $50) and provides teacher bonuses for achieving school growth goals ($500 per teacher). Schools also receive funding for classroom equipment and supplies ($1,000 base plus $15 per 8th-grade enrollment) and coverage for national math exam fees.
Collaboration: It establishes Vertical Teaming meetings to foster discussion and curriculum alignment among 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade math teachers.
Eligibility and Application:
Eligible applicants are schools that are in a position to initiate or dramatically increase access to advanced middle school math programs.
The application process involves an online application by the interested school, followed by a site visit, a formal invitation, and a Letter of Agreement negotiation. Preference is given to schools committed to expanding access to advanced math. New cohorts are typically chosen yearly in December.
