The following communication was sent from KDE regarding the Kentucky Academic Standards for Health and Physical Education. The new standards mentioned below are now available on Navigator under the Standards Deconstruction tab.
(FRANKFORT, KY) -- After undergoing a rigorous revision process that began in the winter of 2023, the revised Kentucky Academic Standards KAS for Health Education and KAS for Physical Education have been adopted into law.
The process included revisions by Kentucky educators and community members, public input and review by the Kentucky Board of Education before undergoing final legislative review and adoption.
The newly adopted standards are effective in law and shall be implemented in Kentucky public schools no later than the second academic year following the review process. The KAS for Health Education and the KAS for Physical Education can be accessed on KYstandards.org. Archived academic standards shall be used until new standards are implemented.
During the 2025-2026 school year, teachers and leaders should begin professional learning to get to know the new standards, consider instructional resources where needed and make plans for classroom implementation in the 2026-2027 school year. Resources to support effective implementation will be available on KYstandards.org in spring 2026.
Kentucky Revised Statute (KRS) 158.6453 calls for the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) to implement a process for reviewing all academic standards and aligned assessments. For more information regarding the standards revision process, please visit the Kentucky Academic Standards Review Process webpage.
Please contact the KDE Standards Team with any questions regarding the newly adopted standards or the standards revision process.
